MG Is Reportedly Planning To Unveil An Electric Sports Coupe
Auto News

In perhaps the most preposterous news of the new year, reports are circulating that MG is readying an all-electric sports coupe. Let’s step back a bit shall we? Such a development would have been impossible if MG was still under British management. Thankfully MG is in Chinese ownership and doing OK. And the Chinese are long-term strategic investors with deep state-funded pockets. The MG sports coupe could be used as a marketing stump, a flagship halo car designed to draw more punters into the brand. MG has a long history of making sports cars. However, the market and buyer have changed since the company’s heyday throughout the 1960s.

Those who bought the MGB back in the 1960s are no longer around to push the heritage message, which is now left to a dwindling number of enthusiasts and clubs. The modern car buyer has a different set of needs and a sports coupe isn’t as appealing as it once was. But hey if you have the resources and want to market your brand with a head-turning pure electric performance car then why the hell not.

Very few details are known about the MG sports coupe, we do know that the proposed car will make use of electric drive train technology supplied by parent company SAIC Motor, tech already used in the MG ZS EV SUV. It could be an uprated two-motor, AWD electric architecture. MG is aiming for a range of around 300 miles and a 3.5scond 0-62 mph time.

The MG Coupe will perhaps be based on the E-Motion concept revealed in 2017 and is rumored for a “we don’t when” launch date. For all we know, it could be a publicity stunt. We’ll just have to wait it out and see what happens.
