The 2021 S Class is currently undergoing final stages of testing before an official reveals in September. We know, from anecdotal evidence, that the all-new generation S Class will borrow styling elements of the current generation E Class. Indeed from various spy shots and official test shots the 2021 S Class has an outward appearance resembling a bigger E Class. And yet the 2021 S Class will be slightly lower, slightly longer and slightly wider than the W222 generation. The current generation W222 was introduced in 2014. In the world of automotive product development, six years is now considered retirement age.

A number of factors influence this six-year product development life-cycle. Primarily the faster evolution of technology, be it mechanical or software/hardware related. Renewing a product is a sign of progression and also a chance to re-invigorate sales. Without product evolution and continual development, in theory, we would all still be driving steam-powered cars.

We do know the next-generation S Class will be trending towards an electrified powertrain. How do we know this? The EU has mandated an all-electric future as part of a wide-reaching effort to reduce industrial emissions. However, Hybrid and all electrified vehicles will also eventually be banned by 2035. 

For the time being the S Class will be offered with updated versions of currently available and familiar mild-hybrid engines and hybrid powertrains. Expect to see an in-line 3.0-litre straight-six mild-hybrid petrol and a 4.0-liter V8 hybrid and or mild-hybrid. There will be no fully electric S Class, which is an odd decision.

The W222 S Class will also get an overhauled MBUX infotainment system and Level-3  self-driving systems. The W222 S Class will continue to offered in short and long-wheelbase derivatives, however, the future of the S Class Coupe is unknown.
