The Audi A6 Plug-in Hybrid Saloon, You Know It’s Going To Be Utter Perfection
Auto News

In our opinion, which is rarely if ever heard, Audi is perfection built on a solid base of perfectionism. From design, engineering to build, everything Audi does has a measured approach, like a sculpturer… doing his or her sculptury-type-thing. We really ought to work on the grandiose rhetoric, but Audi can do no wrong because it never has. And now they move on and forward with the Audi A6 Plug-in hybrid. The ICE age (Internal Combustion Engine) will come to an end in 20 years or so. And make way for the electric-powered age, which ironically will run off a power grid fueled by fossil fuels, we have an era of plug-in hybrids, a solution to reduce corporate emissions. A plug-in hybrid is an equivalent of planting a tree.

Nevertheless, before the ICE age is over, motoring manufacturers are going to efficiency the hell out of fossil fuel-powered cars. Enter the plug-in hybrid, a halfway house between the fusion of analog and digital technology. The new Audi A6 50 TFSI e plug-in hybrid delivers on both fronts, supplying 299PS via Quattro drive, 0-62 mph is delivered in 5.5 seconds.

The A6 50 TSFI Plug-in hybrid is powered by a 2.0 TFSI engine with 252PS of output and 370 Nm (272 lb-ft) of torque. The additional 105kW electric motor delivers a peak torque of 350 Nm (258.1 lb-ft). The combined power output delivers 299PS of ‘system power’ and 450Nm of ‘system torque’. In electric-only mode speeds of 84mph can be reached. The petrol engine can enable a top speed of 152mph.

The electric motor is integrated into a seven-speed S Tronic transmission which can deliver output to either two wheels or four depending on the driving situation. The Quattro on-demand system uses a multitude of data to determine if it should prioritise efficiency by decoupling the rear axle to reduce drag, or support maximum agility by engaging all-wheel-drive, as required.

The A6 50 TFSI e can be plugged into a domestic AC 7kW wallbox using the Type 2 cable supplied, and around two and a half hours later the lithium-ion battery is fully charged from zero. Using a public charging point also takes around 2.5 hours from zero. Depending on specification, up to 34 miles can be covered purely electrically, combined emissions emitted are as little as 35g/km, claims Audi.

The A6 50 TFSI e Plug-in hybrid looks just like any other A6, it can be had in combination with Audi’s list of model trims. Standard alloys wheels of up to 20 inches in diameter are standard for the Black Edition and Vorsprung versions. In addition, Black styling elements, privacy glass and either Matrix LED or HD Matrix LED headlamps to ensure the car doesn’t stand out on the strength of its efficiency stats alone.

If you want to keep a slightly lower profile you can of course choose the Sport model with its 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlamps or the S line with its 19-inch wheel upgrade, lowered sports suspension, S line body styling and Matrix LED lamps with signature LED rear lamps.

And of course, you will also get the latest in-car gadgets and gizmos, leather-no leather, infotainment/touchscreen Star Trek experience all modern Audi interiors exude. The A6 plug-in hybrid also has the latest iteration of Audi’s autonomous/predictive driving tech. AI technology learns how you drive to make future journeys more efficient.

Sounds Orwellian, but it’s better popularised as “driving modes”  EV – for all-electric driving,  “Hybrid” for the combined efficient driving, and “Hold” to conserve the electrical energy available at any given time. The Audi A6 50 TFSI e Saloon is available to order now, priced from £52,790 OTR. The estate version will follow at a later date, to be confirmed by a conveniently timed press release.
