Hamilton’s USA GP Victory Keeps Faint Title Hopes Alive
Formula One
Lewis Hamilton had one of his best weekends of the year at the 2016 US GP, in clinical form Hamilton finished the weekend as he begun, at the top of the time sheets. His victory in Austin, Texas still leaves a 26 point void in the drivers championship between his rival and team mate Nico Rosberg. Even if Hamilton wins the final three races of the season Rosberg only has to finish second to clinch his first drivers title. Bearing in mind that team Mercedes has the superior car it looks as though Rosberg could well play it safe all the the way until the season’s final race. Why should Rosberg take risks when he has a big advantage over his team mate? usa-gp-2016-a Hamilton has taken the brunt of the reliability issues this season, had the engine in his Mercedes not given up in Malaysia the deficit to Rosberg would have been jut two points. And who’s to say that Rosberg won’t suffer some kind of issue in the final three races. usa-gp-2016-b Statistically it’s more probable that Rosberg will suffer some kind of technical issue whereas Hamilton shouldn’t simply because Rosberg is due some type of technical issue. Or it could be the case that Rosberg suffers no other issues in the remaining races. usa-gp-2016-h But at the USA GP Hamilton drove like a three times world champion, serenely going about his business and for once making the better start on race day. Rosberg, starting second on the grid, made a poor start by his standards and was subsequently out flanked by third placed Daniel Ricciardo. usa-gp-2016-c However with a superior car Rosberg was able to recover back to finish second while Ricciardo finished a comfortable third ahead of Sebastian Vettel whose Ferrari team are falling prey to Red Bull’s resurgence for second place in the constructors championship. usa-gp-2016-d Ferrari also had to contend with the forced retirement of Kimi Raikkonen who was secure in fifth place until his team put him on a three stop strategy from a two stop. All seemed well until his final stop. usa-gp-2016-j However as Raikkonen left the pits he was ordered to stop because his pit crew had not securely fastened a wheel nut. Ferrari were also fined £4500 for what was deemed an unsafe release. Behind the front runners were the also runners, the highlight being Fernando Alonso’s charge through the field. With a much improved McLaren Honda Alonso was able to hustle his way past the Mercedes powered Williams of Felipe Massa 4 laps from the end. usa-gp-2016-l Alonso’s opportunistic move on Massa caused the Williams to pick up a right front puncture but Alonso was fine and honing in on his next target 5th place from the Torro Rosso of Carlos Sainz. But Sainz was on faded tyres and with one to go lap Alonso sneaked past the gripless Sainz. usa-gp-2016-i Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton finally won his 50th Grand Prix, only Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher have won more, 51 and 91 respectively. usa-gp-2016-g But historical stats do not matter for 2016, the current stats say Hamilton is 26 points behind his team mate in the drivers title with three races remaining and 75 points available per race win. These are irrefutable facts. usa-gp-2016-i What Hamilton needs to secure his fourth drivers title and prevent Rosberg from wining his first is something that can not be statistically calculated and that is simply a massive amount of luck.  usa-gp-2016-f
