Audi Suspends Engineers As Emissions Cheating Begins To Choke
Industry News
The emissions crisis that is sweeping through the Volkswagen empire has finally cloaked its deadly cloud of scandal onto VW’s premium luxury brand, Audi. This was inevitable as it was Audi announcing the immediate suspension of two of its engineers over claims that larger diesel engines were also found to have suppressed C02 emissions readings. Last week Audi revealed to U.S authorities that around 85,000 of its cars equipped with the V6, 3.0-litre diesel engine had a device fitted that enabled the engine to disguise the true measure of C02 emissions. Audi, like Volkswagen, is investigating whether its core group of technical staff were involved in the creation and adoption of these devices that were designed to cheat emissions testing and dupe regulators into believing the C02 test results were accurate as stated. Both Porsche and VW also use the same V6 diesel powerplant which is designed and built by Audi at its Neckarsulm factory in Germany. So far six senior executives and eight engineers have been suspended over the emissions cheating saga. Volkswagen has seen its reputation battered as though it is caught in a hurricane. Volkswagen and its portfolio of companies are on the receiving of justifiable public, corporate and regulatory anger. Since the story broke VW has lost more than 20 billion euros in market value. Former CEO Martin Winterkorn was ousted and VW is expecting a long drawn out cycle of litigation estimated to cost $7 billion dollars and a campaign of reputational bruising.  Audi-HQ
