When Owning A McLaren Supercar Literally Becomes A Deadly Honour
Auto News

McLaren is being forced to comply with a recall order issued by the NHTSA – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – after the federal safety department identified 2,763 McLaren, supercars sold to American customers, are at risk of catching fire. McLaren fuel tanks are susceptible to microscopic corrosion which can release small amounts of fuel vapor or liquid. McLaren says the leaking fuel vapor will deposit to a cooler part of the vehicle, meaning the risk of a fire is relatively minimal. But they do admit that over time the issue could escalate.

That sounds more like mansplaining, an excuse you expect to hear from dodgy Doug, the part-time mechanic, not McLaren Automotive. The NHTSA wasn’t persuaded by McLaren’s lackadaisical explanation and decided it’s a risk not worth taking on American roads. McLaren has revealed that 2008 720S supercars built between 2016-2020 will be recalled.

In addition, 373 570GT models, 225 McLaren GT models and 157 McLaren Senna’s are being recalled. McLaren will replace any fuel tanks that are in need of replacing for free. But the best solution is always to get it right during the design, development and production phase.
