Bentley Continental GT Causes Automotive Extinction Event As It Kills The Mercedes S Class
Auto News

Mercedes is planning end sales of the S Class Coupe and Cabriolet when the next generation S Class saloon/sedan is introduced in 2021. Mercedes is discontinuing the S Class Coupe and Cabriolet due to a number of factors. The company is in the middle of a cost-cutting plan that will see 15,000 job loses. Add into the mix product recalls a $1bn USD fine over dieselgate and losing the premium no.1 sales battle to BMW.

But this automotive extinction event was caused, not by the sun getting too hot, but… by the Bentley Continental GT. The Mercedes premium luxury image is known across the world. They do very nice premium luxury and the S Class is the pinnacle of Mercedes luxury. Bentley is a step up into ultra-luxury and Mercedes simply can not compete with ultra-luxury.

And when you compare the S Class Coupe with the Bentley Continental GT it’s rather like comparing a Ford Mondeo Vignale with a luxury £5m mansion. Often auto manufacturers discontinue a specific car because of low sales, and I guess that’s the real reason why Mercedes has decided to call time on the S Class Coupe.

But think about it this way… why would you buy an S Class Coupe when you can buy a Bentley Continental GT for not very much more money? The Continental GT is sheer class, the Mercedes S Class Coupe is just an S Class Coupe.
