That is the question no one is prepared to ask because you don’t want to upset Ferrari or the Schumacher family. Both are considered to be F1 royalty, especially Mick Schumacher who is the son of Michael Schumacher. And that begs another question, does Mick Schumacher’s name open doors more easily than it would otherwise do. Almost certainly yes.

During his time in the sport, Michael Schumacher raised F1 to another level. When Schumacher Snr joined Ferrari he all but resurrected the Scuderia, a team that had floundered for nearly two decades.

So one can understand why Ferrari would want to put Schumacher Jnr in a current F1 car. It’s partly emotional, partly marketing driven. However, Mick Schumacher has at least earned his stripes.

He started racing karts at an early age and is a race winner in the single seater category. He won the F3 European Championship in 2018 claiming eight wins in the process.

He has migrated to Formula 2 for 2019 and lies 8th in the overall standings after one race with an OK performance. A move into F1 is providence, not an impossibility.

But why do we think Mick Schumacher is being used to promote Ferrari and by proxy Formula 1? News is gathering pace that the 20-year-old will test the Ferrari F1 car at the German Grand Prix during FP1.

Schumacher Jnr has already tested for Ferrari after the Bahrain Grand Prix. And naturally, that caused a blaze of publicity. A Schumacher, in a Ferrari at the German Grand Prix is ’emotional’ marketing.

The hope is more people will buy tickets to attend the 2019 German Grand Prix just to see Mick Schumacher out on track behind the wheel of a Ferrari.

The net benefit is increased merchandise sales, probably an increase in ticket prices, a flood of TV and web advertisement just advertisement all round.

But to the German public, it will be emotional because Michael Schumacher is not too dissimilar to sporting god in his home country. All the more so because of his current state of being.

Don’t be surprised to See Mick Schumacher test a Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix. But we reckon Formula One is still 2 seasons away.
