Robert Kubica Will Return Full Time To Formula 1 After 8 Years Away
Formula One
It wasn’t his desire to stay out of Formula 1 for eight years but now Robert Kubica is back after signing a deal to race for Willimas F1 in 2019. His absence was due to an accident he suffered while participating in a Rally event in 2011. Kubica, who was signed to the then Lotus F1 team was competing in the first stage of the Ronde di Andora rally during the F1 winter break. The crash at the Rally event was near fatal, Kubica suffered a partially severed forearm and multiple fractures. In effect, his recovery has taken 8 years. Now aged 33 Robert Kubica was seen as one of F1’s outstanding talents of his generation. However, he found that the doors were firmly closed to making a return to F1. The demands of single-seat racing, in particular, Formula One is unique. The high g-forces placed on the driver’s body is immense to even the fittest. Eight years is a long time and F1 technology has moved on. However, Kubica recovered enough to return to rallying in 2013 and continued competing until 2016. By 2017 Robert Kubica was back testing for Renault, he was as quick as he had ever been. Later in 2017, Kubica began testing for Williams F1. Robert Kubic impressed enough to become the team’s 2018 reserve driver. As of today, Williams F1 announced that Robert Kubica would race for full time for the 2019 season. But at a cost. Williams F1 has always used paying drivers as a means to generate revenue and it was Kubica’s sponsorship backers that ultimately closed the deal. Maybe we’re being cynical but we don’t fall for the narrative many are saying that this is a remarkable comeback. Afterall Kubica’s personal sponsorship will be funding his return. This is a return from a career threating injury and it will be interesting to see how Kubica performs among the new generation of younger stars. For the time being Kubica will generate a lot of headlines and empathic press coverage for his strength of character. But at the end of the day, F1’s harsh reality is all about results, points and prize money. If Kubic doesn’t deliver he will find no empathy from Williams F1. However Robert Kubica was obviously more positive, of his return he said: “From the human point of view, I understand and see the point that it is a story that probably nobody has believed. Probably the only one who never gave up was myself and the people around me. “We all knew that it might be something not achievable. This shows that somehow nothing is impossible. “It is a normal way of thinking that people see my limitations and ask how it is possible I can do it, and I know it is hard to believe. “But Williams has seen it this year and I have seen it in the last 16 or 18 months since I first drove an F1 car in Valencia last year that I can do it, thanks to work, but also that my limitations are not limiting me as most people are thinking.” Claire Williams, Deputy team principal of Williams F1, said: “It is a great credit to his strength of character and tenacity to return to Formula 1. He has a level of determination that is remarkable to see.”
